DORSEY, John

Dorsey, a black sailor, lived with his mistress, a prostitute named
Ann McGirr, alias Ann Hopkins, in a five-story tenement dwelling at
No. 3 Worth Street, New York City, which was inhabited by black pros-
titutes and their lovers. On the night of March 10, 1857, he returnec
home drunk and met Miss McGirr in the alley behind the house, An
argument developed and he drew a razor from his pocket and used it to
cut her threat from ear-to-ear, Convicted and sentenced to die, he
was hanged at the Tombs ‘rison on July 17, 1857.
