the fourth grade in school, left home when he was 16-tgears-old and
roamed the midwest, working as a farm laborer, He is known to have
served a term in the Iowa State Prison for slaughtering some stock
belonging to an employer with whom he had an argument, and was a
parole violator at the time of his final crimes, He was in Omaha,
Nebraska, on the night of Feb. 1), 1986, when he attempted to rob
W. Le McDevitt. McDevitt resisted the attempt and Carter shot and
