REED, Thomas William

Reed, a 3l-year-old black man who lived at 12) South llth St,, Louis~
ville, Ky., was a former industrial policeman who as employed as a
laborer by his landlord, a Louisville hardware merchant. In 1937 he
began a common-law relationship with Louise Young and they lived to-
gether until December, 193, when they got into an argument and he
bludgeoned her to death with a heavy chair and buried her body under-=
neath the coal house in the rear of the residence, When her relatives
inovuired for her after she had failed to visit them during the Christ-
mas season, he explained that she had gome to Detroit, The next year
he established a common-law relationship with Lena Lewis and this last-
ed for several months before they got into an argument and he bludgeon-
wd her to death with a fire poker, disposing of her body in the same
manner, On July 21, 198, a plumber's helper digging in the coal house
for a broken pipe, discovered the skeletons oB both women and Reed was
taken into custody for ouestioning, At first he denied any knowledge
of the bodies but after the skull of Miss Young was identified by its
teeth, he made a complete confession after which he was led screaming
to his cell, Indicted for both mrders, he was tried for the Young _
slaying on December 8. 19uG convicted and sentenced to die, After his

conviction had been affirmed by the Kentucky Court of Appeals, a writ
for a petition of habaes corpus was denied by the U, S, District Court
