Lowry, a 22-year-old white native of St, Louis, Mo,, whose father
had died when he was 7-years-old, had gone to Chicago as a teen-ager
and worked for a time as a postal clerk, He had served one sentence
in the workhouse and two years in an Illinois penitentiary for lar-
ceny, After his release from prison, he and others conspired to and
robbed a mail train, using inside knowledge of payroll shipments that
Lowry had obtained while working for the postal service. The bandits
were subsequently identified and the police were searching for Lowrye
On Sept. 25, 1926, he returned to St. Louis, accompanied by a friend
and his h<year-old daughter, Lowry planned to marry a St, Louis giri
that afternoon and leave for California, He was driving his car at
an excessive speed when it was noticed by Patrolmen Eugene N, Lovely,
a former school-mate of Lowry, and his partner, Patrolman Thomas J,
Jones and they gave pursuit. After Lowry struck another vehicle and
failed to stop, they overtook him and forced him to the curb at the
intersection of Kings Highway and Lindell Boulevarde, Both officers
were approaching the car with their guns holstered when Lowry emerged
with a pistol drawn and began firing. Lovely was struck three times
and died within a few minutes. Jones, struck by a bullet which sha-
ttered his ankle, returned the fire and Lowry was shot in the bhoul-
