Fearn, a 23-year-old white brakeman for the Santa Fe Railroad, lived
in Pueblo, Calo. where he became fascinated by the primitive Peni-
tente religious sect of the Bueblo Indians which tortured its mem-
bers and practiced human sacrafice, A sadist, he had envisioned
kidnapping and torturing young ladies and had even selected victims
but always backed out at the last mimte. On the eveing of April
22 , 191.2, he accosted a 17-year-old nursing student, Alice Porter,
who was walking home, and forced her at gunpoint into his automobile
which he drove up into the mountains to the Penitente Morado, the
abandoned center of the extinct secte He BOAKAXEKS forced the girl
to strip and then bound her with wire that he had. heated until it
was red hot and then tortured her by slabhing her body with a knife
and stabbing it with an awl. He then raped her and bludgeoned her
to death with a hammer before throwihg her body into an aba ndoned
well nearby. Miss Porter's father,a retired Pueblo detettive, re-
