Jordan Sheats, black, hanged Danielsville, Madison County,
Gas, on Nove 1h, 1879, for the murder of John Ledbetter,
white, on Feb. 2h. It seems Sheats and his employer were
quarreling when Ledbetter sought to intervene and Sheats
shot him. Spoke to several persons as he made his way to
the scaffold and appeared calm and unmoved, Made brief

trial and should not be hanged, reiterating his ulaim that
he had killed Ledbetter in self-defence, firing only afte
