WHITAKER, Walter E., Jr.

Whitaker, a 19-year-old native of Wethersfield, Conn., was the son of
a well-to-do and respected transportation executive. However, his
police record showed no Less than 46 violations of the law for crimes
such as vandalism, petit larceny, housebreaking, automobile theft and
safe-cracking. Finally he joined the U, S, Air Force to escape pro=
Secution and was stationed at Reese 4ir Force Base outside of Lubbock,
Texas, while awaiting admission to £light training school. While at
a Iubbock skating rink, he met 18-year-old Joyce Fern White, a high
school ‘student who lived nearby and a romance blossomed between the
two. Miss White wanted to move up the date of their prospective

marriage EKEXX but Whitaker was more deeply in love with a girl back

in Wethersfield. Shortly before he was to be transferred to San
_ Antoniog he claims that she told him that she was pregnant and he

egreed to elope to New Mexico. On the night of Jan. 8, 1953, they
returned from their date early and he left her house ailone, By a

pre-arranged plang he returned and she met him, They drove out in
the country and Whitaker claims that she informed him that she was.
