A 23-year-old medical student, Carlyle Harris murdered
18-year-old Helen Potts, to wham he had been secretly
married on February 8, 1890, by morphine poisoning in
January, 1891, There was public disagreement over his
guilt and he protested his innocente until he w as
electrocuted on May 8, 1893, in New York. His mother,
a temperance and religious leader who had overindulged
him had his coffin engraved: "Carlyle Hrris, murdered,
May 8, 1893"
