JUBEART, John
Jubeart, a white native of America, was born én Staten Island in 1701.
He became a baacksmith and expert clock and watch repairman, . He and
his wife, a native of New Jersey, had a happy life together and were
the parents of three children, two of whom died during childhood,
Shortly after his surviving daughter married, Mrs. Jubeart died, and
he became melancholic and restless, He wandered over New imgland for
several years, plying his trades from place-to-place, and finally re-
turned to New York where he settled “at a place called Quaker-Hill in
the Great Nine Partners at which place he had heard was a silver mine,"
Jubeart did find a small quantity of silver which he melted down with
five Spanish dollars, He then forged ten Spanish dollars in what he
KWAK later termed "an experiment" with not ahtention of fraud. However,
the old man ran low on money and when he needed some necessities, he
attempted to fass one of the counterfeit coins and was arrested, He
was taken to New York City where he was tried, convicted and sentenced
to die for counterfeiting. On September 6, 1769, he was hanged "at
the stone fence" near the City.
