Kelly, a Littlefield, Texe black man, had been drinking heavily on
the night of July 18, , 1937. After he Thad became thoroughly intoxi-
cated, he "shot up" the bleck residential area of Littlefield and
walked away, As he staggered past the cotton gin, Sheriff F, A. Loyd
and Deputy Sam Hutson drove past. The Sheriff, who did not know that
Kelly had been using his weapon to disturb the peace in the black
section, stopped the car to check him out because he was obviously
drunk, Without warning, Kelly fired one shot and killed the Sheriff,
The Deputy shot at Kelly, striking him in the arm and breaking it.
As Kelly staggered off into the stacked bales of cotton, Hutson
summoned help for the BXEX&KSK fallen Sheriff before following. He
overtook Kelly in same weeds behind the gin and Kelly surrendered
without further résistance. Because of the intensity of local febling,
XKE Kelly was taken to Imbbock and held in jail there until his trial,
Convicted and sentenced to death, he was electrocuted at the Texas
State Prison on March 15, 1938, :
