MILLS, Major

Mills, a Memphis, Tenn. black man, was married to a daughter of
Alex Gill, a night watchman for the Illinois Central Railroad, He
and his wife quarreled frequently and she had left him several times ,
returning each at the instigation of her father, Wfter their last
argument, she stated that she would never live with him again, Once
again, Mills begged Gill to intercede with him and the elderly man
agreed to do soe However, this time he was unsuccessful as his
daughter was determined hot to return to her husband, On the after~
noon on January 3, 1905, Mills had been drinking and he went to the
Gill home in South Memphis to plead with his wife again. She was
adamant in her position and when Gill started to leave for his job,
he told Mills to accompany him. As Gill stepped out the front door,
Mills grabbed a pistol from a mantle piece and shot him in the back,
Mills escaped but was Subsequently captured and maintained at his
trial that Gill attacked him and the pistol discharged accidentally
in their scuffle. Varioys members of the Gill family, including
Mills' wife, who had witnessed the incident denied this and he was
convicted and sentenced to die, He was hanged in the Memphis jail

Yard on July 18, 1905. When the noose was placed about his neck, he
