"The first legal execution in Tarrant County, Texas,

took place during June, 187), a time when Tom James was
sheriff. The gallows waserected near the old race track
on the Qld Spring road, in the northeastern part of the
city, and Sol Bragg, a negro convicted of the murder of a
paddler (Matthew Green) wasexecuted, There were no rail-
roads in the county then, but people from all over Tarr-
ant and adjoining counties came to Fort Worth to witness
the execution, many of them arriving the day before and
camping near the gallows, Bragg made a speech from the
scaffold, confessittng his guilt and asserting his sins
had been forgiven. He cal led upon all who saw him die

to meet him in the better life beyond the grave,.!' STAR-
