sop Coe, Ores, where his land bordered a ranch owned by J, Frank Tay-
lor, a former legislator who had served two terms as Circuit Judge
and was, at the time, serving as President of the State Board of Pi-
lot Commissioners, Hansel had borne the Judge a grudge for several
years and the situation was aggravated when the Judge, acting as
attorney for Mrs, Hansel, filed a suit for divorce, On the morning
of Sept. ll, 1913, Judge Hansel was walking down Commercial Street

in Astoria with a valise, headed for the train station where he
planned to catch a train to Caatsop Plains to visit his property,
when he was confronted by Hansel, armed with a .32 caliber pistol,
who had been watiting for him, Without warning, Hansel shot him and
when Taylor fell to the ground, he fired two more bullets into his
prostzate form, inflicimgg wounds from which Judge Taylor died that
same daye Hansel was hurriedly tried, convicted and sentenced to
die and, as thecase was not appealed, he was hanged at the Oregon
State Prison on Nov. 17, 1913,
