"A serious conspiracy of slaves in 1829 was uncovered
around Georgetown, S. C. (See Aptheker: 'Maroons within
the present limits of the United States,' in JOURNAL OF
NEGRO HISTORY, (1939) XXIV, pp. 286-287.) In that work it
is stated that theleaders of this plot were named Charles
Prioleau, Nat, Robert and Tuico and 'It is known only
that the last named was banished.' Petitions dated 1829
in slavery files No, 2, 5. C, Historical Commission, re-
veal thatCharles Prioleau was hanged 9-18-1829, and that
at least four othe slave rebel leaders were executed at
about the same time, Jt is clear, too, that the informer
in this plot was a woman named Henrietta (aslave was exe-
wuted for attempting to kill her), and that she was re-
