Both white, hanged Sevierville, Tenn., 7-5-1899, Were
whitecappers who had murdered William ¥& Laura Whaley on |
night of Dec, 28, 1897, They confessed and said they were
lured to the deed by Bob Catlett, Tipton's neck broken ané
Wynn died of strangulation, Mrs, Tipton and five children

witnessed execution, There were several bandsxof whit ecaps

in County of Sevier, and Catlett Tipton was Supposed to be

leader of one, It was charged that Robert Catlett was the
County leader, He was known to have wated William and
Laura Whaley out of the way because they had testified
against him in a whitecapping case, Both Wynn and Tipton
swore on oaths after convictions that Robert Catlett had
hired them to murder, but Catlett escaped on a mistrial and
went into hiding, Wynn & Tipton went to themountain cabin
of the Whaley's on the night of 12-28-1897 and shot both
down, Mrs,Whaley's sister, Lizzie Chandler,was hidden
