_ Bagley, a 43-year-old inmate at San Quentin, had a lengthy record com-
prised of convictions BE for holdups, stabbings, burglaries and was
serving a life sentence for the 1932 mrder of Vancouver, Galif.,

_ Police Sergeant David Maxwell, On March 12, 193), he and another
lifer, Ethan Allen McNabb, attempted to escape using as weapons pistols
that they had made themselves, McNabb shot and seriously wounded
_another prisoner and Bagley beat a guard, Fred Miller, into uncon-
sciousness with the BYEXSEXKXSXPASRSX butt of his pistol. After a
gun battle with other guards in which Bagley's waa shot a number of
times in both legs, they were captured. Convicted of assaulé with a—
deadly weappn while serving life sentences, a capital offense in
California, both men were sentenced to die and they were hanged BS
jointly as San Guentin on Sept. 6, 1935.
