RUEDA, Agapito

Rueda, a 29-year-old Mexican citizen, unable to speak #nglish, was a
member of a gang recruited by Jose Carrasco to rob the payroll of the
Galveston, Harrisburg and Yan Antonio railread in £1 Paso, Tex., on
March 18, 1924. Other members of the gang were Adrian Sanchez, Man-~
vel Villareal, Alejo Mintarez, and Juan Orgego, all natives of Jua-
rez, Mexico, recruited by Yarrasoo , an employee of the G. H, and

5S. A. The gang intercepted the automobile carrying the payroll at
an intersectiony and opened fire, killingWilliam Meers, a federal
Beserve Bank guard and Anastacio Lopez who recognized Carrasco and
révealed his identity before he died, When Carrasco was taken into
custody, he confessed and named his accomplices, Rueda, with a ser-
ious leg wound, was taken into custody the next morning and Sanchez
was also captured. The other three bandits escapéd into Mexico and
the government refused to extradite them. “Sanchez died in the “1
Paso jail awaiting execution while Carrasco and Rueda were sentenced
to die. Carrasco was able to receive a new trial and a life sentence,

but Rueda's appeals were in vain and he was electrocuted at the Texas
Sta te Prison on Jan. 9, 1926, protesting his innocence to the last

in the only two English words that he knew: "Not G"ilty."
