Owens ’ alias Radcliffe, never revealed his a identi ty or back-
ground though it was generally believed that he was a menber of a
good family from Bell Co., Ky. He claimed to have spent 15 vears
in crime and his maxk body bore the marks of a number of cutting
and shooting frays, On the night of of Sept, 22, 1900, he and a
companion, William Daily, were hidden in a BEBEK railroad stock car
as it passed through Paris, Ill. Two young Paris men, James F,
Hogue and Emory Vandeventer boarded the car and as it pulled out of
Paris, Cwens and Daily made their presence known and demanded the
young men's money. While Vande venter willingly gave up the $8 .1,0
that he possessed, Hogue resisted, struck one of the attackers and
fled to the top of the car, Owens fo] lowed, shot Hos gue, then re-
