Bingaee » 2 6'7" "Pennsylvania Dutch" foundry worker who was between
25h -and 30 years old, accompanied a peiidler friend, 4paphras Mattews,
on a-trading expedition into Ohio in 1815. All along, K&% Aunghst
planned to rob Matthews. Originally he intended to take his com=
panion's money and leave him tied in the woods but he was thwarted
several times by the arrival of other parties just as he was ready
to act. About 14 miles outside Ravenna, he bludgeoned Matthews to
death with a fence post, took around $270 from the corpse and be-
gan his journey back to Pennsylvania, The two men had been seen
together iny any number of persons on their trip and Aupghst was
immediately suspected. As he stopped at practically every tavern
on his return, he was easily traced and he was taken into custody
in Pittsburgh and returned to Ohio to stand trial, He confessed
and was sentenced to hang. ‘Shortly before his execution, he es-
eaped from jail but he was tmedtatoly recaptured and on “Nov. 30,

1816, he was hanged at Ravenna, A crowd of 1,800 Paes witnessed

Aunghst, a 6'7" "Pennsylvania Dutch" foundry worker who was between
