TAYLOR, William

Taylor, an 18-year-old black native of Columbus, Ohio, together with
George Jones, also black, was hired by Isaac Yoakam, a prosperous
farmer who lived north of Columbus to assist in cutting wood which
he had contracted to provide various firms in Columbus. The two men
were provided a cabin in which to live on Yaokam's farm and there
they plotted the robbery and murder of their employer, On the night
of Dec. 20, 189), they went to Yoakam's corn crib where they knew
that he was performing his evening chores and bludgeoned him to

death with clubs, They divided the money that they found on his
body and fled, Taylor was taken into custody several days later at
the home of his step-father in West Virginia but Jones was never
captured. Convicted and sentenced to die, two hours before his

death he made a confession in which he alleged that He had not

struck Yoakam but that Jones alone had killed hime MHKXHX He admitted,
however, that he had taken a share of the proceeds of the robbery.

He was hanged at the Ohio State Prison on July 26, 1895, He went to
his death, calmly and smiled down at the witnesses before the trap was
sprung. ‘is neck was not broken by the fall and he died of strangula-
tion over a 2 minute period of time,
