A white shoemaker was hanged at Flemingsburg, Kye, on
Dec. 11, 1829, Was charged with William and John, slaves
of John Cochran and Samuel, 2 mulatto & slave of heirs of
James Lewis, with having killed John Summerville, Sr., by
Striking him on the head with a thrown reck on the night
of Septe 21, 1829 and Summerville died on Septe 28 of the
wounde McLaughlin tried first, convicted and sentenced to
hange The blacks then tried and John sentenced to receive
30 lashes while William & Samuel were sentenced to be
hanged on Dec, 18, McLaughlin was executed on schkdule
on Dec, 11, 1829, on a gallows erected near abranch about
one mile below the village of Flemingsburge The Covernor
was prevailed on to pardon both Willian and Samuel and

their owners produced the pardons as they stood on the
