VAN AUKEN, Wilhelmus

Van Auken, a white resident of Newton, Ne Jey murdered his wife,
leah, during the night of January 1-2, 1821. At his trial, several
witnesses gave evidence against him and Van Auken admitted that he
had killed her but claimed insanity as a defense, Nonetheless, he
was conficted and sentenced to die and on January 25, 1822, he was
hanged in a meadow on the lower side of Newton,
