Cox, a veteran of the U. S, Army during, World War I, was a 39-year-old
black farmer who lived about three miles from Warsaw, Richmond County,
Vase On December 19, 1930, three State Prohibition Inspectors, James
Newton Wood, Frank M, Wood, and R. S. Durrette, armed with a search
warrant, went to his home, Cox was away at the time and the,officers
entered and found five gallons of moonshine whiskey, They started
back to Warsaw but when they passed Cox who was returning home with
another man, they turned around and followed them. After Cox had en-
tered his house, they called on him to surrender, Cox appeared at an
upstairs window, armed with a shotgun, and told them to go and get
the Sheriff of Richmond County if they wanted him, James Newton Wood
saw that he was armed and called to Durrette to obtain their shotgun,
loaded with buckshot, from their car, After Durrette had returned
with the gun, Cox fired at J. N, Wood, the load taking effect in the
temple and XMXXWXXHZE blowing his skull away, ‘Frank Wood and Durrette
then went to Warsaw and got Sheriff Bryant and Commonwealth Attorney
