Hanged at Williamsburg, Va., on 11-23-1739 for robbing
the store of his master, Col, Woodford, of Caroline
County, “ad been sentenced on Nov. 2, 1739. VIRGINIA
GAZETTE, Williammburg, Virginia, Nove. 2 & 23, 1739.
According to the article in 11-23-1739, Sarah Matts,
"an accessory with Constantine Matthews in robbing Col,
Woodford...was (upon intercessions in her behalf) par-
doned by his Honour the Governor,'' According to Nov. 2
article, she, too, was originally sentenced to be hanged
