James Scott, sent up from Orange County, VA, hanged for
murder at Richmohd, VA, on Dec. 5, 1788 . THE NEW YORK
PACKET, 1/23/1789m 2/2, quoting a Winchester paper of

Dec. 24, 1788.
VIRGINIA GAZETTE, 10/2/1788 & CALENDAR OF VIRGINIA STATE

PAPERS, Vol. 4, page 502 (Public Printing Office, Richmond,
VA, 1884) Page 529 gives details of crime as follows:

Went to Brightwell8sTavern in Orange Co. to drink and
encountered James Johnston. Johnston was ejected by the
tavern keeper but returned and the landlord agked Scott8a

help in subduing Johnston. In the encounter Scott shot
and killed Johnston.
