Wighaman, his mother-in-law and his wife, Maggie, on
Septe 21, 1889; lived with his in-laws with whom he
constantly quarreled; accused his wife of infidelity; on
night of murder he slept in the cellar; as his wife was
preparing breakfast he slipped upstairs and shot her;
he then went upstairs and killed his mother-in-law; at
execution the rope broke twice; inside the jail was
crowded; after the murder he shot himself twice in a
suicide attempt which failed but which partially para-
lyzed hims was stoical at execution and encouraged the
sheriff's deputies who faltered at their grim task; he
wore a black cutaway coat, dark striped trousers, patent
