McCord, a Jackson Co., Ala., black farm tenant and his wife, Nancy
Ruckles McCord, lived on a farm in the BRSSXXH Grace Pond Church
Community a few miles from Scottsboro. The McCords quarreled con=
stantly and fought frequently. As Nancy McCord was much larger and
far stronger than her husband, she always won the battles and he re-
sented this situatioh so mich that he was frequently heard to remark
that he would put a stop to it even if it meant killing her, In May,
1891, Mrs. McCord disappeared and her husband was immediately suspected
of having made good his threats. The Sheriff was notified and when he
and a posse arrived, they noticed drag marks Leading away from the

McCord's nude body buried under some mud and brush. She had been
