LEDDRA, William
Leddra, a white man, was a professed Quaker who was living in COST y
Mass. , when an act was passed on Oct, 19, 1658, banning all Quakers
from the Colony, He was. arrested Shortly afterwards at a meeting
and when he admitted his beliefs, he was lodged in the Plymouth Colo-
ny Jail. lLeddra was offered his freedom if he would 48x
agree to voluntarily leave the Colony within a specified time, While
he stated that he would possibly leave at some time, he would not
agree to an stipulated date and maintained that his imprisonment was
unjust and illegal, He was finally freed in 1660 when he agreed to
leave the Colony, He then went to Salem which had the same restric-
tions and he was promptly arrested and placed in the House of Correc-
tions at Loston where he refused to work for his food and was repeat-
edly whipped, He was finally released and told to depart the Cotony
on penalty of death, He fefused to leave and was again arrested,
tried, convicted and sentenced to die. He was hanged at Boston on
March 1h, 1661, As he mounted the ladder, he said: "All that will be
Chrits's disciples tlust take up the cross." His last words were:
"Lord Jesus, receive my spirit,"
