Taylor, a 28-year-old black resident of 709 Woods St., Nashville,
Tenn., was employed as a houseboy in the home of an insurance execu-
tive near Donelson in February, 19 On the morning of Feb, 18,
1926, he entered the room where his employer's 2l<year-old wife was
reading, He was armed with an ax and told her that he planned to
kill her as he wanted money, He struck her over the head, inflicing
serious mutilations to her head and face and,waxxxan thinking that
she was dead, began ransacking the house, The woman recovered suffi-
ciently to call a friend and report the inciden, Taylor overheard
the conversation and returned with the ax which he used to almost
amoutate her hands, He then took her car keys from her purse and
left in the aubomobile which he abandoned before he reached Nash-
ville, He had taken around $25 from theglove compartment of the
car and he used this that night to carouse the town, Tyalor was
taken into custody the next afternoon at the home of his grandmother
where he had hidden under a bed in the basement. He made a complete
confession and was taken to the State Prison for safekeeping until
his trial where he was convicted of rape and sentenced to die, While
awaiting execution, he was thk cell-mate of 19-fear-old Frank Haynie,
also black, Haynie obtained possession of a khmfe and killed one of
