Eugene L. Avery, alias Archie Brown, and James Johnson,
hanged at Portland Oregon on March 1, 1879, for the
murder of Louis Joseph a small oy in August, 1878,
Louis Joseph, a small boy, was in their way as they
attempted to escape from an officer who was in pursuit
after they had been caught assaulting and robbing a
pawnbroker in his shop, They fired at the officers
and missed but the bullet struck the boy, killing him,
Appealed to Ore, Supreme Court and affirmed. Astrong
effort made to have sentences commuted,
