"Nov. 25, 1881-Richard James, colored, was
hanged at Marion, 5. C.,, for the murder of
D. M. Harrall. A brother of Richard James
was hanged in June. Hinchard went to the
gallows with a firm step; claimed to be inno-
cent. He did not say whether his brother was
guilty. Obtained permission to address the
crowd and delivered a wild harangue about
feeling sure of forgiveness and eternal happi-~-
ness. His neck was not broken and took five
minutes for him to strangle to death."
