"May 18, 1883-Henry Knight, colored, was publicly hanged
at Waycross, Ga., today for the murder of Edward Hunter,
a colored bandmaster, near that place, July 1, 1882,

At noon, themurder mounted the galhows, professing re-
ligion, and asked the crowd to take warning and profit
by his example and meet him in heaven. Twenty-five hun-
dred people witnessed the hanging. The neck was broken"
