(Cleburne, Johnson Co,, Texas) eccurred on Mar. 19, 1880,
. when Sam Myers, sone of an early Alvarado settler,
was haneed, The noose was tightened around Myer's neck in
the old, jail yard at-the- corner of Anglin and Chambers
Streéts, Myers in company with James H, Bowden, was con-
victed of murdering Mrs, Mary A, Hester on Feb. 21, 1877,
She was shot through the window of her home as she sat at
the supper table, After several trials and one escape,
Myers was hanged before a crowd of 6 or 8 thousand people,
Bowden escaped a similar fate but attempted suicide by
