CHASE, Foster

Chase, a 25-year-old mlatte, Lived in New Orleans, La., where he
fell in love with a young mlatto girl, Louisa Prevost, According
to Chase, Miss Prevost's mother was in leve with him herself and
interfered with his courtship of the girl, finally ordering him not
to see her again. On Sunday, April 6, 188), Chase went to the resi-
dence of her employers and was met at the door by her mother who
ordered him away. He left, mittering threats, and that evening, as
Louisa and her mother were walking to their home, he met them on the
streets, He muttered a few words to the girl and then drew a revol-
ver and shot her, He turned the weapon on himself and shot himself
through the head, Beth were taken to the hospital and, while kme
she died, he recovered to stand trial where he was convicted and
sentenced te die, Chase had always borne a good reputation prior
to the mrder and, religious by nature, he spent most of the time
awaiting execution in reading religious works and praying. He was
hanged privately: in the Parish prison yard at New Orleans on June
