VAUGHNS, James Edward

Vaughns, , 30-year-old black man who was considered to be of low
intelligence, was separated from his wife and lived at 620); Outh-
waite, Avee, Cleveland, Ohio, On the night of Nov, 17, 1956, he
attended a K@HE party at the home of some friends, Sylvester and
Murcile Buchanan, who had formerly lived next door to him just
after they had moved to Cleveland from Union Springs, Ala., two
years previously, The party broke up about 3 o'clock in the morn-
ing and after their. guests had left, Mr, and Mrs, Buchanan went to
the home of a neighbor, leaving their door unlocked and their three
young children asleep, After the parents had departed, Vaughns re-~
turned and entered through the unlocked door, He took 17-month-old
Michele Dianne Buehanan from her bed to an abandoned matress in the
driveway of a deserted brewry located at the corner of East 63rd St,
and Outhwaite Ave., and there raped her, leaving her to bleed to
death, ‘When the parents discovered the missing child, they went in
search and met Vaughns who told then that he had heard a child
yeying in the neighborhood of the brewery and they went there and
found the body of the infant who died from loss af blood and expos-

ure to the cold at a hospital, Mrs, Buchanan told the investigating
officers that Vaughns' trousers were opeme and that his pants were

covered with feathers from the mattress as was the baby and he was
