Collett, a 60-year-old white man, was a prosperous farmer and praducer
of purebred Bogs who lived with his wife and their son on their farm
at Wilmington, Ohio, Mrs Collett's sister was married to another
prosperous farmer, Elmer McCoy, and they lived on another farm, inheri-
ted from the two sisters’ mother, MEX#XN at Oakview, Fayette County.
The relationships between the two families had always been close even
though Collett had, on at least one occasion, remarked to a friend
that were it not for the fact that the McCoy's had a daughter, Mil-
dred, his son would inherit their property. On the Saturday prior to
Thanksgiving, 1943, the Colletts spent the day with the McCoys and
the men went hunting. Before the Colletts left, arrangements were
made for them to return to Oak View for Thanksgiving dinner, . The
night before, on Nov, 2h, 1943, Collett drove to Oak View alone and
shot Elmer McCoy in the bakk of the head in the barn, He then went
into the house and shot Mrs. McCoy six times and Mildred McCoy once,
killing the entire family, The bodies were discovered the next day
and a week later Collett was taken into custody by the sheriff with-
