Karl, a 28-year=old/native of Rockville, Md., had a lengthy criminal
record that includéd prison terms in the New Jersey State Prison and
the Illinois State Prison for pickpocketing, robbery and assault.

On the night ofApril 20, 1907, he and Frank A, Walker went to the
Sidney, Ohio, meat market owned by William B, legg. Earl shot Legg
twice, killing him instantly, while Walker grabbed a bag containing
the butcher's receipts, the proceeds of which the two split equally.
They were taken into custody shortly afterwards and Walker confessed
w hile Earl, whose real name was Howard West, denied any knowledge of
the crime. Walker gave State's evidence and received a life sentence
while Earl was sentenced to be electrocuted. Before his electrocutio
on Dec. 20, 1907, Walker issued a statement that he had lied at Earl!
trial and that Earl was not with him when Legg was killed and robbed,
This statement was not believed nor were Earl's continued protesta-
tions of innocence and the elgctrocution was carried out on schedule,
His last words were: "Oh, God, forgive my past sins."
