NOTTINGHAM, Samuel

Nottingham, a white physician, was born in Kentucky and a graduate

of the Cincinnati Medical Yolle ge. He lived.in Indiana for a number
of years and while there his first fife, the mother of his several
children, died under mysterious circumstances which led to speculation
that he had killed her. He moved to Missouri and settled in what is
now Virgil in Yernon Co. and married a young widow, Mrs. Sarah Duncans
One evening Mrs, Nottingham was @ngaged in milking when Yr, Nottingham
returned from seeing a patient and they started joking each other.
finally she good-naturedly threw some milk on him which enraged him
and he struck her. “he told him that bhe was going hometo her father
and would not live with a man who abused her, Nottingham followed and
when she refused to return with him, he threw a large stone and hit
heron the temple, _He then bludgedned her to death and hid the body
in a neabpy cave. The next day, he dug a shallow grave and, as the
body was too heave for him to carry, he cut it in two pieces and
