NEWS & COURIER of Dec, 8, 1888 X2x¥6X (2:6)

Phifer was black and murdered his mulatto stepdaughter,
He had AXRSANEXKAREXKRA married a white woman who al-
ready had a 1l5=yeareold daughter named Lucy Smith,
After the wedding, Phifer declared that the girl was

to be his concubine and swore that he would kill her
Lif she eleped behind his back. Four years later she
eloped and on Oct. 18, 1888, he shot her down in the
road,
