Gage, a lO-year-old black man, was an ex-convict who lived &n Fort
Worth, Texas. Around 9:30 on the night of Nov. 15, 1952, a 21-
year-old white Polytechnic housewife (Ruth Sanders) who worked as a
cashier in a downtown store, alighted from a city bus and was walk-
ing to her home two blocks away when Gage and 19-year=old James
Miles Oliver, riding in Gage's aubomobile which was driven by Olivey
overtook her and Gage dragged her into the backseat, He held her
down on the floor while Oliver drove. to a dump on the north side
and they dragged her from the car, After taping her eyes, Gaye
raped her three times and Oliver twice, Between the cracks in the
tape, the woman was able to, get,a good look at both men and after
they had released her, she walked to a nearby cafe, arriving at
1:15 AM on the morning of Nov, 16, The police were notified and
Gage was picked up shortly afterwards, Her watch and glasses were
found in his car and her powder puff and lipstick was in his jacket
pocket. When Oliver was arrested, he confessed and said that they
