"James Baxter, a nogro, convicted of the murier of Mrs,
Lane, an aged widow, for the purpose of robbery and
hanged here(Lebanon, Tenn.) June ),, 1886,"

"The crime for which Jim Baxter was executed this morning
was committed on Septe 5, 1885, Andy Church was arrested as
an accessory and gave the particulars of the affair, He
had gone with Baxter at his @olicitation to Mrs. Lane's
home, A demand was made for money. Mrs. Lane said she had
none, Baxter pushed her over on the floor with one hand an
dealt her a severe blow with a rock with theother, She
lived for some time and identified her assailant, Jim Bax-

ter's last utterances were: 'I did not kill Mrs, Lane,
