COCHRAN, Freeman (treet)

Cochran, a white farmer, lived near Blythedale, Harrison Co., Mo, One
of his neighbors, George Stanbrough, was married to his mother's half-
sister. On one occasion Stanbrough had supposedly beaten his wife
with a whip and an enmity had developed between the two men with Coch-
ran swearing that he would get revenge. On August 17, 1897, Cochran
had gone to Ridgeway with a friend and had been drinking, On their
return, they met Stanbrough who was going to the home of John Briant,
married to Stanbrough's wife's twin sister, At that time, Cochran
cursed Stanbrough and accused him of beating his aunt, When Cochran
arrived home, he took a whip and armed himself with a shotgun and went
to the Briant farm where Stanbrough and Briant were loading some hogs
into Stanbrough's wagon, Holding the cocked Bun in one hand, he be-~
gan whipping Stanbrough with the whip. Finally, he agreed to fight
Stanbrough and they tuseeled for a few minutes, during the course of
which Briant unloaded the shotggn, They then went to BRXAHXXXWEH
Briant's house and Cochran sneaked two shells from a kitchen shelf
and reloaded his xk gun, Stanbrough and Mrs, Briant were standing on

the front porch talking when Cochran shot EXXKAM Stanbrough in the
back of thehead, He then walked over and fired the other barrel into
