Spangler and Frederick Verner were captured in Pennsylvania by Co-
lonial forces and charged with being British spies and with serving
as guides for the British. Both were convicted at a court martial
instituted by General Benedict Armhnld and sentenced to deathe Span-
gler was hanged on schedule in Philadelphia on August 1h, 1778,
while Verner was given a respite. He spent some time in jail and
was finally exchanged for an American being held by the British.
