Hickock, 28-years-old, was serving a term in the Kansas State Prison
for automobile theft when he met the 3l-year-old Smith who was serving
a sentence for burglary and armed robbery. The two became close
friends and made plans to join their criminal careers after both had
been released on parole. While at prison, they had overheard another
convict describe a safe in which a wealthy \8-year-old farmer, Herbert
We. Clutter, kept over $10,000 tn his house near Holcomb, Kans, SAX€Ks
HXRMEXSEXNSE Early on the morning of Nov. 15, 1959, they entered the
Clutter residence through an unlocked dopr and bound Clutter, his
lS-year-old wife Bonnie and their two children, 16-year-old Nancy and
15-year-old Kenyon. They had already decided that they would leave
no witnesses to identify them and when the Clutters finally convinced
them that there was no safe, theycut Cluttekt's throat and shot him
twice with a shotgun, Kenyon Clutter was shot in the head wit the
same gun as were Mrs, Clutter and Nancy, The bodies were discovered
_ the next morning by two friends of Nancy's who had arrived to ride to
church with the family. The only apparent clues were two bloody
footprints found by the body of Herbert Clutter. When it was learned
that Hickock and Smith were both wanted for having failed to report to
their parole officers, they became suspects. The convict who had
