| 26-year-old Italian, electrocuted Sing Sing Prison (Kings County). on
December , 1893,
"Sing Sing, Dec. , 1893=At 11215 AM, John Delfino, the Italian mur-
derer, was successfully electrocuted here for the murder of an Italian
woman some months ago. The crime for which Delfino paid the death
penalty today was the murder of Mrs, Carroline Gessell, an Italian
woman, living at 167 DeGraw St., Brooklyn. Delfino and the, woman's
husband were rag-pickers, and the families were intimate, On the 27th
of-December last, at 6 o'clock in theevening, Delfino and another
Italian named Joseph Pegar went to the Gessell house to spend the
evening, There they began drinking, having sent out several times
for beer from a neighboring saloon, Pegar was sent for a pitcher of
beer and Gessell soon followed him, He had been out of the house but
a few minutes when Delfino jumped up, and drawing a revolver fromhis
pocket said to the woman: 'You tell your husband too much,' He had
hardly spoken the words when he fired three shots at her, All of
them took effect, one entered her breast, the other her groin, and the
third her leg. As soon as Delfino fired, Pegar grabbed him, but kthe
infuraated Italian fired a shot at him. The ball, however, did not
hit him and it lodged in the wall, Delfino rushed from the house
and disappeared. He was arrested the next morning, The wounded
woman was taken to the Long Island hospital, where shexdied on Jan,
