Swann, a 19-year-old black man who had served sentences in a Tennessee
Reformatory and in the Tennessee State Prison system, lived with his
parents a short distance from the Jefferson County Poor Farm home one=
and one-half miles from Dandridge, Tenn, On the afternoon of Dec. 2h,
1932, Miss Sarah Abbie Rainwater, a 53-year-old white resident of the
home, had been visiting her stepmother and was returning to the farm
when it began raining, She stopped at the Swann house until the rain
ceased and then continued her journey across a field, She never
reached home and the next day her body was found in a clump of weeds
about 00 yards from the home, She had been criminally assaulted and,
in the course of her struggles, her neck had been twisted and broken,
Tracks from the scene of the murder led to the Swann home and James,
his father and his brother-in-law were all arrested on suspicion, On
Dec, 29th, after a friend of James came forward and testified that Hkx
