"Knoxville, Tennessee, November 21, 1890 - Jack Maples,
colored, was hanged here today for rape upon Mrs, Rufe
Lewis near Halskill Station on the 18th of last February.
Maples denied his guilt to the last and a dramatic scene
was when on the gallows, pointing his finger at Conner,
the principal witness for the state, he accused him of
