(Lee County) April 9,-1937, "McDuffie was sentenced to
die by Judge C, C, Featherstone for the confessed axe
slaying of an elderly widow in LeeCounty, The jury re-
turned the verdict after 36 minutes! deliberation,
Solicitor Frank A. McLeod, in speaking to the Negroes in

‘the courtroom during the trial of McDuffie, urged that

some of the race go to Columbia to witness the electrocu-
tion, He expresséd the opinion that it would be one of
the best things that could happen to the Negroes of Lee
County, McDuffie said that he killed Mrs. Margie Ann
Brown and robbed her home of a small sum of money,"
