his name was Green Jofmson,. He was hanged at this same
spot ("Oak Hill," -back of Presbyterian College, Columbia,
Kye) on August 25, 1865. In company with several other
soldiers, he went at night to the home of Gaither Miller,
who lived on the Jamestown Road about three miles from
Columbia, The object of the visit being to steal chickens,
John Miller, son of Gaither Miller, an ex=-Union soldier,
hearing some unusual noise about the chicken roost, got up
and went out to ascertain the cause, and received a mortal
wound, dying in a few days after he was shot. There was
another moon that night and he knew the thieves were sol=

diers. The roll call of Capt. Curry's compmpy was called
early the next morning and Johnson was missing. After a

lapse of several months the fugitive was caught in Fent=
ress Co,, Tennessee, by a man named Taylor and his son, an
