INDIAN 3eptember ’ 1840
An unnamed XMaXaH free Indian accompanied by an Indian slave , accom-
panied by two Indian women, were traveling from one lodge to another
when they KXH4XH passed near the camo at the Pillar Rock, Ore., where
AXEXAMARK Kenneth McKay, a trapper for the Hudson's Bay Company, and
an Indian boy were salting salmon in late August, 181)0,: The free In-
dian suggested to the slave that they rob the sleeping trapper and
when,the slave agreed they began rummaging through McKay's things,
McKay awoke and inquired what was happening and the slave shot and
killed himxwhile the free Indian repeatedly stabbed the Indian boy
until he died. The Indians attempted to escape but were overtaken
and the slave and one of the women were killed while the other woman
was seriously injured. The free Indian managed to escape but the next
day was surrendered to the hudson Bay's agent at Forg George by his
chief, On the following day, after perfunctory legal proceedings, he
was hanged under the supervision of the Chief Factor, Dr, John McLough-
lin before a large group of Indians to whom Dr, McLoughlin spoke, in-
forming them that the Boston (Americans), King George (English) and
